Slip away from the bustling beach scene elsewhere in York and visit the more intimate York Harbor Beach, also known as Mothers’ Beach. Small children love playing in the waves while their families picnic nearby in the sand. The secluded beach, a favorite of local residents, is also a top pick for exploring tide pools.
Nestled along the rocks on the York shoreline, this short, sandy stretch of beach is perfect for the youngest kids. The beach abuts 4-acre (1.6-hectare) Hartley Mason Park, also known as the Hartley Mason Reserve. The park has plenty of shady spots, public restrooms and an outdoor shower.
With its breathtaking ocean views and verdant grounds, the picturesque park is a favorite for summer weddings,. From here, access the pretty Cliff Walk, a typical York coastline walk.
If you have older kids who want to boogie board and surf, consider visiting nearby Long Sands Beach. This popular beach is 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) long and has rental shops for watersports equipment, from surfboards to umbrellas and floats. Known for its views, the beach has great vantage points for glimpses of the Nubble Lighthouse and Boon Island.
Another York beach option is Short Sands Beach, a bit north of Long Sands Beach. There’s more sand here at high tide than other area beaches due to a higher sand bar. Check out the arcade on the sand, the Fun-o-Rama, or watch how saltwater taffy is made at the Goldenrod.
After enjoying the beaches, visit the communities of York Village, York Harbor, York Beach and Cape Neddick. Enjoy the many shops and restaurants geared toward pleasing tourists.
Before visiting York beaches, check the tide chart. At York Harbor Beach, you’ll find that the available sand area is quite limited for about an hour at high tide. Lifeguards are on duty from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Park along the street and walk through Hartley Mason Park to the beach or ride the trolley and hop between beaches.
