Few teams have captured the enthusiasm of fans around the nation quite like the Atlanta Braves. America’s oldest professional sports team has a history that spans 3 different cities and almost 150 years, and a legacy that traces the story of baseball itself. Whether you pay a visit to SunTrust Park or pick up tickets to see the Braves on the road, you can find a great way to experience America’s national pastime whenever the team takes the field.
Founded as the Boston Red Stockings in 1871, the team became a charter franchise of the National League and played in its first official game (which they won). The team gave up their old nickname by the turn of the century, accidentally passing it on to the American League’s Red Sox. While the Boston Braves played strong enough to make the first clean sweep of the World Series in 1914, the next 40 years would get rough.
In 1953, the team made history in a new way when they relocated to Milwaukee, becoming the first franchise to leave the East Coast. The Milwaukee Braves won the World Series in 1957 and never saw a losing season, but a big new stadium and a bigger TV market sold them on the move to Atlanta in 1966.
In Georgia, “the Bravos” found more fame than ever before thanks to Ted Turner and the broadcasting deal with TBS that put their games in living rooms from coast to coast. The whole country was watching when Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth’s home-run record and when the 1995 Braves became the first team to bring the World Series title home to 3 different cities. Legends like Phil Niekro, Greg Maddux, and Tom Glavine helped to build a phenomenal record for today’s Braves to carry on.
A ticket to a Braves game gives you the chance to experience one of the best things to do in Atlanta, and lets you see how Major League Baseball’s oldest franchise has kept the game fresh with some of the best play in the sport. Watch the fierce rivalries with the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies, follow the quest to bring the World Series back to Atlanta, and see for yourself why the Braves are still going strong.
The Braves were founded in 1871 in Boston as a charter member of the National Association of Professional Base Ball Players.
The Braves home ballpark is Truist Park. It opened in 2017 and replaced Turner Field which had been the team's stadium since 1997.
The Braves have won three World Series championships (1914, 1957, and 1995)
The Braves have had a fierce rivalry with their division rivals New York Mets dating back to when the two first met in 2962.
