Cardi B History

Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar was born in The Bronx in 1992. In highschool, Almanzar was a member of the Bloods. She said that turning to stripping at the age of 19 was an escape from the poverty and violence that struck her early life. She joined the cast of Love & Hip Hop: New York in 2015. She left after two seasons of the show to pursue a career in music. Her first two independent mixtapes landed her a deal with Atlantic Records and garnered the attention of other artists like Lil' Kim and Remy Ma. At the 2017 BET Awards, although she did not secure an award, she tied with DJ Khaled and Kendrick Lamar for the most nominations that night. Later that year, Cardi B released her debut single, “Bodak Yellow”. It reached the No. 1 spot on Billboard, making her the first female rapper to do this with a solo single since Lauryn Hill. Several successful collaborations followed, like “No Limit” with G-Eazy and A$AP Rocky and “MotorSport” with Migos and Nicki Minaj. Cardi kicked off 2018 with a feature on Bruno Mars’ “Finesse” as well as becoming the first women at have 5 top 10 singles on the BillBoard Hip Hop chart. She released her debut album, Invasion of Privacy, in April to universal positive acclaim. It became the most streamed album by any female artist in a single week in Apple Music. She received the highest number of nominations at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards, winning 3 out of 12 nominations. Her most recent venture was at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, where she set a new attendance record with 75,580 fans.
