Since debuting his first studio album in 1994, Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli has become one of the most recognized names in classical music. He’s released a total of 15 solo albums, appeared on 13 complete opera recordings, and sold more than 80 million records worldwide. The singer-songwriter has been credited with bringing classical music to the masses, reaching the top 10 of the Billboard 200 with 7 of his records and becoming the biggest-selling classical-crossover solo artist with his album Sacred Arias. He’s sung aside famous performers such as soprano Sarah Brightman and superstar Celine Dion, the latter of whom won a Golden Globe with Bocelli for their Best Original Song “The Prayer.” Bocelli’s duet with Brightman—“Time to Say Goodbye” off his 1997 album Romanza—not only became one of the best-selling singles in the realm of classical music, but one of the top 20 best-selling singles of all time. Andrea Bocelli’s passion for music began very young as he first started taking piano lessons at age 6 and listening to records by other Italian tenors like Franco Corelli. Despite permanently losing his eyesight following an accident at age 12, Bocelli went on learn how to play the flute, saxophone, trombone, trumpet, guitar, and even the drums. By 14, he was giving small concerts and winning competitions, later performing in piano bars as he worked to put his way through law school. But Bocelli always knew he wanted to be a professional singer, and, in 1992, he auditioned for Italian rock star Zucchero, who was looking for tenors to perform on his song “Miserere.” He landed the gig, later won the newcomers section of the Sanremo Music Festival, and released his debut album, Il Mare Calmo della Sera. By 1994, he was performing in operas alongside Pavarotti and singing for the pope. More than 20 years later, Bocelli is still wowing audiences with concerts around the globe.
