Cincinnati Reds History

Cincinnati’s first baseball team was disbanded after president William Hulbert refused to sign a rule pledge in 1880. A sports editor of the Cincinnati Enquirer, O.P. Caylor, used this as an opportunity to create an independent ballclub known as the Red Stockings. Caylor, Reds former president Justus Thorner, and former Pittsburgh Alleghenys president H. Denny McKnight devised a plan to create a rival to the National League. The American Association was officially formed, and the Reds won the inaugural AA pennant in 1882. The Cincinnati Reds saw true glory from 1970-1979, when they were otherwise known as The Big Red Machine. The team won six National League West Division titles, four National League pennants, and two World Series titles during this time, being noted as one of the best teams in baseball history. Hall of Famer Sparky Anderson headed the team, and featured legendary players like Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan and Tony Perez. They marked down an overall record of 953 wins and 657 losses, and they are the only National League team during the last 75 years to win back to back World Championships. Though they are not the dominating force they were back then, its no doubt that the Reds put up a good fight and their games are very worthwhile! Get your Cincinnati Reds tickets now.
