Cleveland Browns Team History

The Cleveland Browns were first founded in 1944 in the newly formed All-America Football Conference (AAFC). Their first coach, Paul Brown, is often referred to as the “father of modern football”. By 1949, the Browns were absorbed into the NFL and became an unstoppable force. Between 1950 and 1955, Cleveland reached the NFL championship game every year, winning three times.  During the 1979 and 1980 season, the Browns came to be called “Kardiac Kids” when quarterback Brian Sipe pulled a series of last minute wins. In 1995, owner Art Modell announced plans to move to the team to Baltimore. After threats of legal action from the city of Cleveland and fans, a compromise was reached in early 1996 that allowed Modell to establish the Baltimore Ravens.

Since resuming activities in 1999, the Browns have struggled to find success. The team has had only two winning seasons (2002 and 2007), one wildcard playoff appearance (2002), and no playoff wins. In 2017, the Browns became only the second team in the league to finish a season 0-16, joining the 2008 Detroit Lions.
