The Foo Fighters: Keeping Nirvana's Legacy Alive

It’s impossible to speak about Foo Fighters without bringing up Nirvana first. Dave Grohl was the drummer of the legendary rock band, Nirvana. Nirvana is credited to be one of the most important and influential rock bands of the 90’s, and lead singer Kurt Cobain was seen as a spokesperson for the generation. Thought of as one of the most tragic events in rock history, Kurt Cobain was found dead at his home in Seattle from a self-inflicted gunshot. Grohl received many offers to join other bands like Pearl Jam and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, but he was more interested in recording the songs he had written whilst in Nirvana but was too intimidated by Cobain’s talent in song writing to share at the time. His demo eventually circulated throughout the industry, gaining interest from musicians and labels. They made their live debut in 1995 with Nate Mendel on bass, William Goldsmith on drums, and Pat Smear on guitar. Grohl was unhappy with Goldsmiths drumming while recording their second album, and decided to re-record the drum tracks on his own. Feeling betrayed, Goldsmith left the band and was replaced by long-time drummer Taylor Hawkins. They completed their album, The Colour and the Shape, which included “Monkey Wrench”, “My Hero”, and several other hits. Nothing Left to Lose came in 1999, featuring the Foo Fighters first Billboard Top 100 single, “Learn to Fly”. The bands popularity was soaring, and they found themselves touring with stand out bands like Queen, Weezer, Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin, and more. The band has announced they would take a break on multiple occasions, but the Foo Fighters can’t seem to put their pens down. Their latest album, Concrete and Gold, was released in 2017. The album presents the Foo Fighter’s artistic versatility, featuring vocals from Justin Timberlake, Shawn Stockman of Boyz 2 Men, and Paul McCartney on drums. Come support these rock stars who are keeping rock and roll alive with every performance!
