J. Cole History & Tours

Born on an Army base in Germany but later raised in North Carolina, J. Cole—born Jermaine Lamarr Cole—began rapping at the age of 12 and set his sights on making it his career. Inspired by Tupac, Nas, and Eminem, he worked to develop his understanding of rhyming and wordplay, filling various notebooks with song ideas and lyrics. After graduating high school, he moved to New York City to attend St. John’s University, where he initially majored in computer science before later switching to business. Though he graduated magna cum laude in 2007, he still knew he wanted to pursue music. Over the next 3 years, he released 3 mixtapes to positive reviews and began collaborating with artists like Miguel, Drake, and Omen. Following a college tour that found him performing with the likes of Wiz Khalifa, J. Cole signed with Jay-Z’s record label Roc Nation and began working on his debut album. He served as a supporting act for both Drake and Rihanna and was soon headlining his own tours. Uncomfortable with the traditional life of a rap star, J. Cole has stepped back from the spotlight but will continue to perform live. In 2018, grab tickets to see the star live during the JMBLYA music festival across Texas or at Summerfest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
