The Life of a Son of a Son of a Sailor

American musician, songwriter, author, actor, and businessman, Jimmy Buffett was born in Pascagoula, Mississippi on December 25, 1946. His grandfather was in fact a sailor, and Buffett developed his love of the sea early in life. After college, the young Buffett moved to Nashville, Tennessee to get into the music scene and worked as a correspondent for Billboard magazine. Buffett signed a 2-album contract with Barnaby Records, but his first album did not sell well, and the master tapes for his second were “lost” and not released. However, after Buffett reached stardom, the tapes resurfaced, and his early music finally sailed on the airwaves. Buffett took his first trip to Key West, Florida on a busking expedition, and he fell in love with the area. He moved there and developed his signature easy-going beach-bum persona. In the 1980s, Jimmy Buffett’s concert ticket sales made more money than his albums, and he soon grew a dedicated fanbase known as Parrotheads. Since then, he has released more than 30 albums, several of which have reached gold, platinum, or multi-platinum status.

Ventures in Paradise

Seemingly at odds with his island-escapism vibe, Jimmy Buffett dove into merchandising and various business ventures. You can grab a bite at one of his 2 restaurant chains, called Margaritaville Café and Cheeseburger in Paradise. Beyond music, Buffett wrote 3 bestselling books, co-produced and played a role in the 2006 film Hoot, produced a beer called Landshark Lager, opened a casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and released an online video game. As a philanthropist, Jimmy Buffett co-founded the Save the Manatee Club and has performed various charity concerts, including one in Gulf Shores, Alabama after the BP oil spill and another in Orlando for hurricane relief. Get your tickets to experience Buffett’s newest creation, the Broadway musical Escape to Margaritaville in New York, or see him live on tour with The Eagles when he comes to your town.
