The Raider Story

After originally planning to call themselves the Oakland Señors, the team quickly reconsidered after discovering how easy the name was to make fun of. The team took the AFL championship in 1967 on the way to losing Super Bowl II to the Green Bay Packers, and then John Madden led them into the NFL as a powerhouse of the Western Division.

The Raiders took their first NFL championship in Super Bowl XI, dominating the Minnesota Vikings to cap off a season that cemented their reputation for rough play, and Tom Flores and quarterback Jim Plunkett would led the team back to overwhelm the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XV. Then, the team took the fight to the NFL itself with its first move in 1982, taking a dispute with league owners all the way to an antitrust suit. The Los Angeles Raiders scored another championship in Super Bowl XVIII, but rocky years stretched between that triumph and their return to Oakland in 1995.
