Los Angeles Chargers History

The Los Angeles Chargers were one of the eight teams to be created in the American Football league in 1959. During this era, the team recorded an AFL title in 1963 and reached the AFL playoffs five times. After the AFL-NFL merger, things were looking dim for the Chargers. It wasn’t until 8 years later with the hiring of coach Don Coryell did the Chargers kick back into ignition. Coryell and quarterback Dan Fouts led the team to break records. They led the league in passing yards for six consecutive years, and led in total yards in offense for 5 years during this time. In 1981, the Chargers and the Miami Dolphins battled it out in the game known as The Epic in Miami. The game set playoff records at the time for most points scored in a playoff game, most total yards by both teams, and most passing yards by both teams. It has been voted the best game in NFL history by ESPN journalists. 1994 brought the Los Angeles Chargers there one and only Super Bowl appearance, but they were unfortunately bested by the San Francisco 49ers. Despite the loss, Bobby Beathard, who drafted the majority of the Charger’s roster that year, was named the NFL’s smartest man by Sports Illustrated. The team moved to San Diego in 2009, where LaDainian Tomlinson would break Hall of Famer Jim Brown’s rushing record. Their return to Los Angeles in 2017 has received nothing but backlash. Many football fans do not see the Chargers as a Los Angeles team, and the franchise has struggled to reach their revenue goals as of recent.
