With a storied history dating back to 1947, the Los Angeles Lakers have become one of the most recognized sports teams both in the NBA and around the world. Debuting in Minneapolis before making the move west, the Lakers are one of the 2 most successful teams in the league, with a total of 16 NBA Championships and a long list of famous players like Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, and Kobe Bryant. The team has become synonymous with Los Angeles itself, and fans and visitors alike line up for tickets to watch the Lakers take the court at the Staples Center.
Beginning in Minneapolis in 1947, the Lakers started their franchise with a bang—taking the first season’s National Basketball League championship and 5 of the next 6 national titles after the start of the NBA. The team eventually moved to LA for the 1960 season and, over the next 20 years, signed legendary players like Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. During that time, they went on to set the NBA’s longest winning streak with 33 games and take the NBA Championship in 1972.
The Lakers saw their greatest success in the 1980s with MVPs Magic Johnson, James Worthy, and Abdul-Jabbar. Under iconic coach Pat Riley, the “Showtime” era brought 9 trips to the NBA Finals and 5 more championships, including their first-ever Finals victory over long-time rivals the Boston Celtics. Unfortunately, following the retirement of Johnson and Abdul-Jabbar, the early ‘90s weren’t quite so good for the Lakers. But all that changed in 1996 when the team acquired 17-year-old phenom Kobe Bryant and former
Orlando Magic star Shaquille O’Neal. Together, they helped the Lakers clinch 3 championships in a row before O’Neil was traded in 2004.
The last 14 years have seen many ups and downs, including 2 more championships in 2009 and 2010, followed just a few years later by the worst loss record in franchise history. Today, under Head Coach Luke Walton, the Lakers are continuing to improve season-over-season with a roster that features star-in-the-making Brandon Ingram and rookie sensation Lonzo Ball. The coming years are sure to be exciting, so Lakers fans are definitely going to want to get their hands on some tickets.
