New England Patriots Team History

As an original member of the American Football League (AFL), the Patriots joined the NFL during the 1970 merger of the two leagues. After struggling to start the 1985 season, coach Raymond Berry took lead with hopes of paving the way for victory. After defeating the New York Jets in their first playoff win since 1963, the Patriots continued their streak until they had an unfortunate defeat against the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XX, where they lost 46-10.

The team continued to struggle with management and coaching throughout the next few decades and were unable to secure a Super Bowl title. However, the firing of three-year head coach Pete Carroll in 2000 left the vacant position open for Bill Belichcik, who transformed the Patriots into a perennial Super Bowl contender. After a fifth-place finish during the 2001 season, the Patriots were beginning to see major improvement. Despite the sudden death of quarterback coach Dick Rehbein and injury of Drew Bledose at the beginning of the 2001-2002 season, the team rebounded from their opening losses to the Cincinnati Benglals and first post 9/11 game against the Jets. In Bledsoe’s absence, quarterback Tom Brady led the team to victory in Super Bowl XLIX against the Seattle Seahawks, winning 28-24.

Malcolm Butler, the hero of Super Bowl XLIX, returned to the team after a four year absence, but an injury in preseason led to his being released.
