New York Islanders Ticket Information

Get ready to cheer the roof off Brooklyn’s Barclays Center as the New York Islanders take the ice. Representing New York state’s largest population center, Long Island, the Islanders are right in the middle of the hockey belt, with close-proximity rivalries with the New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers, and New Jersey Devils. Despite playing in the tough Metropolitan Division, the Islanders regularly compete in the NHL Playoffs. The team also has a history of league-wide domination thanks to 4 straight Stanley Cup wins between 1980 and 1983. Though the team hasn’t reached the same level of success in recent years, the New York Islanders are still a lot of fun to watch. History of the New York Islanders

In 1972, William Shea used his cunning and connections to convince New York Rangers executives that an additional New York City-area NHL team would be preferential to a new WHA hockey team in the area. The years following the team’s foundation were highlighted by a combination of financial troubles mixed with tremendous skill at drafting the most talented young players. Despite being in debt and other teams’ offers of quick cash, the team drafted Denis Potvin with the #1 overall pick in 1973. Potvin went on to win the Calder Memorial Trophy, the NHL’s rookie of the year award, and stayed with the team through its dynastic period. The Islanders dominated the NHL from 1979 to 1983, winning 4 Stanley Cups thanks to spectacular play from Butch Goring, Mike Bossy, and Bob Nystrom. Their first Stanley Cup win came over the Philadelphia Flyers, followed by wins over the Minnesota North Stars, Vancouver Canucks, and Edmonton Oilers in subsequent years. The decades after their Stanley Cup heroics found a team struggling to maintain their dominance, but the Islanders still provided fans with reasons to cheer, including the “Easter Epic,” in which goaltender Kelly Hrudey saved a remarkable 73 of 75 shots. In 1993, the Islanders pulled off a miracle when they knocked the powerhouse Pittsburgh Penguins out of the playoffs and prevented the team of superstars, including Mario Lemieux and Jaromir Jagr, from making it to a 4th- consecutive Stanley Cup championship. Since then, the team has struggled a bit, but they have made it into the playoffs 3 of the last 6 seasons.
