Pittsburgh Steelers Team History

The history of the Pittsburgh Steelers traces back to a regional pro team that was established in the early 1920’s, before joining the NFL as the Pittsburgh Pirates on July 8, 1933. To distinguish them from the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team, local media took to calling the football team the Rooneymen, named after owner Art Rooney. The team name was changed to the Steelers in 1940, which was selected by a contest via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Despite a rough beginning as a team, the Steelers implemented their famous “Steel Curtain” defensive line which ultimately led to their first and second (consecutive) Super Bowl wins in 1975 and 1976, and again consecutively in 1979 and 1980. The team’s success in this era led to the expansion of its fanbase beyond its geographic location. Today, Pittsburgh remains among the league leaders in merchandise sales, and draws fans from across the country to its games.

Pittsburgh Steelers Today

The 2017 season was the franchise’s 85th season, and the first season since the death of Dan Rooney: son of Steelers founder, Art Rooney. The season proved to be successful for the team. The Steelers clinched the AFC North division title for the second consecutive season with a mere 39-38 win over the Baltimore Ravens in Week 14, and even a first-round playoff win for the first time since 2010 with a 34-6 win over the Houston Texans in Week 16. However, the Steelers suffered a loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Division Round. Despite this, the Steelers finished with a 13-3 record, their best mark since 2004.
