Savoring the Bites & Sounds of Montego Bay, Jamaica

Sponsored Content

January 2025

Nestled on the north shores of Jamaica and surrounded by the turquoise blue waters of the Caribbean Sea, Montego Bay offers essential ingredients for an island getaway: white-sand beaches, a rich history, and relaxed pace perfect for kicking your feet up.

After a day exploring the rhythms and hues of Kingston, our local guides Runkus and Charissa Skyers are eager to discover what’s in store on the other side of the island. Swaying above white-sand beaches in the Caribbean sun is one of many reasons visitors flock to Montego Bay.

“Montego Bay is always a refreshing change from Kingston. The people here move at a slower pace and bring only good vibes,” Runkus explains.

Introducing “Eats & Beats” – a series that explores the sights, bites and sounds of your next destination. “Eats & Beats: Jamaica | Episode 2: Montego Bay” now streaming below. Watch “Episode 1: Kingston” here.

But bright blue skies and picturesque beaches are only half the story. Much like Kingston—and every other city and parish, for that matter—food and music are at the center of culture on Jamaica’s north beaches; beaches dotted with all-inclusive resorts, world-class restaurants, and the familiar sounds of mento music under every palm tree.

Culinary Delights

Charissa, a chef and restaurateur herself, knows the culinary scene in Montego Bay is one of the island’s best kept secrets. Known for its fresh ingredients and bold flavors, Jamaican cuisine is a celebration of spices, herbs, and cultural influences. From street food to Fine Dining, the options are varied and continue to evolve and innovate.

But before we get to all that, there’s one dish that looms large over the island—a dish worthy of a trip to Jamaica all on its own. And it’s a dish you’ve probably heard of.

“It doesn’t get better than jerk chicken. It’s like tasting history. The flavors and spices came right from our ancestors,” Charissa tells Runkus. Imagine chicken marinated in a savory blend of spices, including allspice and Scotch bonnet peppers, then grilled to perfection on a pimento wood-fire grill. Many visitors come just to get their hands on this iconic dish at roadside establishments, like Scotchies, probably Jamaica’s most famous jerk spot.

But mouthwatering fare doesn’t stop there. Montego Bay is home to some of the island’s most sought-after savory patties. With 60+ locations locally and patties distributed both regionally and internationally, Juici Patties is a beloved local patty chain rivaled only by another local institution: Tastee Patties, serving up beef, curried chicken, jerk chicken and vegetable patties in the area and all over the island.

Another must-try is The Pork Pit which has been listed as “1 of 100 places you must try before you die,” and based on the flavors and spices of their famous jerk chicken and pork, they might have a point.

It wouldn’t be a trip to the island without indulging in its mouthwatering seafood, caught daily and served with a side of festival (a sweet fried dumpling), a local favorite. “The fish in Jamaica is as fresh as you’re going to get. You can tell they caught it ten minutes ago,” says Charissa.

Seafood, among other spiced meats and vegan-friendly options, can be found at many seaside eateries and upscale restaurants where international flavors are fused with traditional Jamaican elements. Places like Sugar Mill Restaurant, offering a unique twist on Jamaican cuisine; Marguerites, an award-winning restaurant serving fresh seafood prepared to perfection; House Boat Grill, situated on the calm waters of the Montego Bay Marine Park Fish Sanctuary; and Delmare, an elegant seafood favorite with Italian influences.

Caught by the hour, seafood is a must-try when visiting the island.

A Symphony of Sounds

Now that Charissa has staked her claim that food is what captures the Jamaican spirit, Runkus steps up to the plate to make his case. “We export such rich music to the world. This tiny, tiny place on the map influences cities, nations, people, you name it. Jamaica alone is responsible for over 25 genres in the world,” he explains.

It’s no secret that music is the heartbeat of Jamaican culture, and Montego Bay pulsates with rhythms that tell the story of the island’s heritage. Reggae, a genre born from the struggles and triumphs of Jamaican people, is ubiquitous in Montego Bay.

Murals at Jimmy Cliff Boulevard and Catherine Hall offer large-scale hand-painted depictions of Jamaica’s vibrant music history. The Jimmy Cliff Boulevard mural honors Jimmy Cliff, himself, while the Catherine Hall mural is a 750-foot-long collaborative piece on Howard Cooke St. in Montego Bay and has come to be known as “The Reggae & Dancehall Wall of Fame,” featuring 40 reggae and dancehall icons like Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Lee Scratch Perry, Yellow Man, to name a few.

Venues like The Hip Strip, a bustling stretch of restaurants, bars, and shops, often feature live performances by local artists. Visitors can enjoy the soothing sound of reggae while sipping on a refreshing rum punch or Red Stripe beer, immersing themselves in the laid-back atmosphere that epitomizes island life.

For those looking to really find their island groove, the Reggae Sumfest is the crown jewel of Jamaican music festivals, with its annual celebration of reggae and dancehall music and culture taking over Montego Bay for seven days each summer.

The sounds of live mento music can be heard around every corner.

In addition to reggae, Montego Bay celebrates various music genres. “Jamaican music is full of so much feeling and vibrance. Mento music turned into ska, ska turned into lovers rock, lovers rock turned into reggae, reggae turned into dance hall….” Runkus explains to Charissa. Today, the air is often filled with the beats of local bands and DJs, inviting everyone to dance and sway. For those who enjoy the livewire energy of live music and want to hit the dance floor after a meal and some drinks, check out hot spots like Coral Cliff, Margaritaville, Pier One, or Lounge 27/27.

Sitting at the bar at The Chill Out Hut, Runkus and Charissa end their trip with a celebratory drink and reflect on their unforgettable tour of their homeland. Runkus raises his glass and offers one parting thought:

“Come for the music that feeds your soul, and stay for the food that is music to your senses.”

Runkus

A visit to Montego Bay is an invitation to indulge in the flavors, sounds, and stories of Jamaica. The robust culinary scene, storied musical heritage, and vivid culture come together in perfect harmony to create an unforgettable experience that resonates long after you’ve left the island. Whether two-handing a helping of jerk chicken, losing yourself to reggae rhythms, or exploring historical and cultural sites, visitors will find that Montego Bay offers a unique and enriching escape into the heart and soul of Jamaica.
