This particular story is based on\u00a0an article<\/a> Kelly wrote after a recent trip to St. Andrews, in Scotland.\u00a0 The story originally was edited by Brenna Holeman, then adapted here in the United States. St. Andrews is a tiny seaside town located on the southeastern coast of Scotland. Just more than a one-hour drive from Edinburgh<\/a>, it is also accessible by train and bus from all major cities in the UK. World renown as the \u201cHome of Golf,\u201d it is home of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, which is highly regarded as one of the oldest and most prestigious golf clubs in the world. Even non-golfers surely will be impressed by the history of the clubhouse in the center of town.<\/span><\/p>\n

I absolutely loved my time in St. Andrews. Not only is the town full of cute shops and caf\u00e9s, but it also has the beautiful green of the golf courses and the view of the sea to enjoy. Most of all, I felt incredibly welcomed by the people of St. Andrews, making me pine for a return visit.<\/span><\/p>\n

St. Andrews is the perfect location for golf as the terrain is on links ground, meaning it never gets waterlogged. Paired with the fact that there are six 18-hole golf courses (plus one 9-hole course) squeezed into this tiny town, there is no wonder why St. Andrews is the home of the sport.<\/span><\/p>\n

With the Open Championship (also known as The Open or the British Open, which is the oldest of the four major championships of professional golf) taking place here July 16-19, 2015, I thought I\u2019d try a bit of golf myself. I played on the Old Course, which is one of the most famous courses in the world; people have played golf here since the early 1400s, and all of the greats have played on its ground. I realized I had never stood on a proper golf course before, and what a beautiful place to be introduced to the sport! My first course experience couldn\u2019t have been any grander.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because I was a beginner, I decided not to attempt an 18-hole course right out of the chute; I needed to start with the basics. I enrolled in a one-on-one lesson with David from the St. Andrews Links Golf Academy and started out with basic putting practice. David was an extremely patient teacher and I had a great time, even though I was a total beginner. David explained to me that St. Andrews in general is a very inclusive golfing community and welcomes anyone that wishes to play.<\/span><\/p>\n

After David introduced me to the grounds and the sport, we headed to an area where I could practice my swing. Monitored by cameras and computer screens, I got to review my technique after each try. With David\u2019s coaching, I surprised myself by hitting the ball quite far!<\/span><\/p>\n

With a variety of courses to choose from, St. Andrews has something for every golfer, even the beginners such as me. Who knows? Maybe after a few more lessons, I\u2019ll make an appearance at the Open myself.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
