Our decision to travel the world was sparked by a desire to learn as much as possible about people, cultures, and different realities here in our home country and abroad. Several years into a life of globetrotting, nothing ignites us more than when we can pair all of that discovery with a chance to make a difference along the way. Similarly, we love learning about what people and organizations\u2014big and small\u2014are doing to make the world more hospitable for everyone.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve long admired the work of St. Jude Children\u2019s Research Hospital. Their lofty mission\u2014\u201cFinding cures. Saving children.\u00ae<\/sup>\u201d\u2014immediately captured our hearts and has intrigued us for years. Recently, a dream of ours was realized when we were able to spend time witnessing St. Jude\u2019s mission in action while visiting Memphis, Tennessee. We had heard about the hospital\u2019s ABCs of Cancer wall\u2014where young patients are able to freely and creatively express their thoughts on cancer\u2014and hoped to one day visit it ourselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

Perusing the wall, we felt the sadness, the honesty, and the hope displayed on the different pieces of art.<\/span><\/p>\n

D is for dreams.<\/span><\/p>\n

T is for tears.<\/span><\/p>\n

W is for wishing.<\/span><\/p>\n

Each expression reminded us that, no matter how lofty the goal or how challenging the obstacle, every great movement is sparked by individual<\/em> stories that prompt individual\u00a0<\/em>decisions to make a difference.<\/span><\/p>\n

Inspired by this reality and by our visit to the ABCs of Cancer wall, we asked the\u00a0Expedia<\/a>\u00a0community to share how they make a difference. Here are some of the responses in our own #ShareHowYouCare<\/a>\u00a0digital ABCs wall: <\/span><\/p>\n

A is for animals.<\/strong> \u201cThis thanksgiving I will be roaming the streets handing out food and water to abandoned dogs.\u201d\u00a0@carrentalrincon<\/a><\/p>\n

B is for bus.<\/strong> \u201cWe give our metro cards to people on the street when we visit Chicago.\u201d\u00a0@rychepet\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

C is for children.<\/strong> \u201cNick took a trip to Guatemala this summer to help? @HopeofLifeIntl<\/a>\u00a0rescue sick children.\u201d\u00a0@goneliving<\/a><\/p>\n

D is for donate.<\/strong> \u201cHave garage sales to help fund the trip and donate part of what we make and have to help others.\u201d\u00a0@TeacherStacyH<\/a><\/p>\n

E is for eat.<\/strong> \u201cWhen I do not eat all of my meal, will give my take-home bag to a homeless person.\u201d\u00a0@kimodo<\/a><\/p>\n

G is for gift.<\/strong> \u201cAlways give to kids. Last gave away my computer chess game to kid in Indian hill village. He loved it! :)\u201d\u00a0@travelbusy<\/a><\/p>\n

L is for local. <\/strong>\u201cWe always shop local and eat in local restaurants.\u201d\u00a0@KBentonDeLauder<\/a><\/p>\n

M is for manners. <\/strong>\u201cI take my southern charm and nice manners wherever I visit!\u201d\u00a0@21_easy_E\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

N is for note.<\/strong> \u201cKeep a note of thanks in your carry on\u2014when you encounter kindness\u2026reward it!\u201d\u00a0@randombutyes<\/a><\/p>\n

O is for opportunity<\/strong>. \u201cI do luv to find a way to volunteer. Even an afternoon at a place for the homeless or hungry. What\u2019s a few hours?\u201d\u00a0@hijinksandhalos<\/a><\/p>\n

P is for plan.<\/strong> \u201cWe check w\/our resort b4 we travel 2 see what [\u2026] their sponsored charity needs.\u201d\u00a0@djjdeb<\/a><\/p>\n

Q is for question.<\/strong> \u201cWould love to know ways to give back when I travel!\u201d\u00a0@wdwnerd<\/a><\/p>\n

R is for rescue.<\/strong> \u201cI have not had the opportunity to yet, but if anywhere has a wildlife rescue needing volunteers, I\u2019m always ready!\u201d\u00a0@stumblingfuture\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

Z is for zero out.<\/strong> \u201cMaking a habit of tipping hotel staff. Good way to discard coin currencies, plus leave bills.\u201d\u00a0@micheleherrmann<\/a><\/p>\n
