To make the most of your trip to Croatia, you’ll want to speak a bit of Croatian. All of the former-Yugoslavian countries share the same Serbo-Croatian language, so once you learn these 10 phrases they will also come in handy as you travel from Croatia to Montenegro and Serbia. Of course some words and dialects differ between the countries, but the general gist is the same.<\/p>\n

  1. \u201cHvala\u201d<\/strong> The best way to make a good impression in another country is to say your pleases and thank yous correctly in the native language. To say “thank you” in Croatian, you say hvala<\/em>. If you wish to say “thank you very much,” it\u2019s hvala puno<\/em>.<\/li>\n
  2. “Molim”<\/strong> The word “please” in Croatian is\u00a0molim. <\/em>For example, if you would like to order a beer you would say pivo molim<\/em> or “beer, please.”<\/li>\n
  3. \u201cJa Sam\u201d<\/strong> To introduce yourself in Croatian, you\u2019ll say ja sam<\/em>. If I were to introduce myself, I’d say, ja sam Courtney.\u00a0<\/em>The \u201cj\u201d in Croatian is pronounced like a \u201cy.\u201d<\/li>\n
  4. \u201cDrago Mi Je\u201d\u00a0<\/strong>Croatians will be quite impressed when you use a few conversational phrases, and this one is great to have in your back pocket.\u00a0Drago mi je\u00a0<\/em>means “nice to meet you” and is customary to say to new friends and acquaintances after they introduce themselves.<\/li>\n
  5. \u201cZiveli\u201d<\/strong> Upon entering any home in Croatia, you will undoubtedly be served a shot of homemade brandy called rakija<\/em>. It\u2019s the national drink of all former-Yugoslavian countries including Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro. Cheers-ing your new Croatian friends with a resounding ziveli<\/em> (pronounced ji-vo-li) will happen often throughout your stay!<\/li>\n
  6. \u201cRa\u010dun, Molim\u201d<\/strong> You\u2019ll want to take full advantage of the wide variety of restaurants throughout Croatia, from seaside cafes\u00a0to rustic kafanas<\/em>. After indulging in delicious Balkan delicacies, you can ask for the check by simply saying, racun<\/em> (pronounced ra-choon).<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. “Dobar Jutar \/ Dobar Dan \/ Dobro Ve\u010de” <\/strong>– You’ll have many great days and nights on your Croatian vacation. To say “good morning\/afternoon\/night” you should learn the word for good, dobar. <\/em>To say “good morning,” it’s dobar jutar, <\/em>for “good afternoon” it’s dobar dan, <\/em>and to say “good\u00a0evening” it’s dobro ve\u010de!\u00a0<\/em>

Kafu Molim<\/strong>\u00a0Like their Italian neighbors across the Adriatic sea, Croatians drink lots of coffee all throughout the day and there is a booming cafe culture across<\/span>\u00a0country. To order your coffee like a pro just ask for\u00a0<\/span>kafu, molim, <\/em>which means “coffee, please!”<\/span><\/li>\n
  9. Koliko Ko\u0161ta<\/strong> Want to know how much something costs?\u00a0Just ask,\u00a0koliko ko\u0161ta<\/em>? You’ll be quoted a price in Croatian kuna, the national currency.<\/span><\/li>\n
