Pictures, Legendary Pictures and Tencent Pictures, the much anticipated action epic will bring one of the most iconic movie monsters back to the screen with a heavy-hitting cast led by Tom Hiddleston (<em>The Avengers, Thor: The Dark World<\/em>), Samuel L. Jackson (<em>Pulp Fiction, Avengers: Age of Ultron<\/em>), John Goodman (<em>Argo, The Big Lebowski<\/em>), Brie Larson (<em>Room, Trainwreck<\/em>) and John C. Reilly (<em>Guardians of the Galaxy<\/em>, <em>Chicago<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>To bring the film\u2019s seminal title character thundering back to the screen, Vogt-Roberts drew together an A-team of behind-the-scenes collaborators, who would push the envelope on design and effects, and raise the bar on digital character creation.<\/p>\n<p>And to achieve the full scope and scale of the exotic and dangerous Skull Island, Vogt-Roberts swept cast and crew on an ambitious 6-month shoot across three continents to film on location in some of the world\u2019s most breathtaking landscapes\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com\/g\/pt\/ms-dest-kong?langid=1033#offertab=0&amp;page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oahu, Hawaii<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com\/g\/pt\/ms-dest-kong?langid=1033#offertab=2&amp;page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Australia\u2019s Gold Coast<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com\/g\/pt\/ms-dest-kong?langid=1033#offertab=1&amp;page=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vietnam<\/a>, where filming took place across multiple locations, some of which have never before been seen on film.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mary Parent (Producer)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cEarly in the process, we fixed on the potential of Skull Island, which has its own weather system and otherworldly qualities,\u201d said Parent.\u00a0 \u201cWe aimed to show audiences something they haven\u2019t seen before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Director)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re bringing a myth to the screen not as a symbol but in the flesh, it\u2019s critical to place him in an environment that feels tactile, real and absolutely alive,\u201d the director said.\u00a0 \u201cSo it was incredibly important to shoot the film practically in environments the actors can interact with, as opposed to putting them on a green screen stage.\u00a0 I want people to look up at the screen and say, \u2018I believe that could exist.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>KUALOA RANCH, HAWAII<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-37646\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/VF1_KRanch.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"755\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <em>Kong: Skull Island<\/em> adventure begins when a team of scientists, soldiers and adventurers come together to explore a mythical, uncharted island in the Pacific, unwittingly igniting the ultimate battle between man and nature.<\/p>\n<p>In Oahu, Hawaii, Vogt-Roberts and company found the ideal backdrop for the film\u2019s otherworldly destination on the lush, diverse terrain of Kualoa Ranch.\u00a0 Nestled between towering peaks, one of the lush valleys that wind through this 4,000-acre private reserve on the windward side of O\u2019ahu was transformed by the production team into an evocative boneyard \u2013 one that could only exist on Skull Island.<\/p>\n<p>In one key sequence, the film\u2019s exploration team\u2014a combustive mix of soldiers, scientists and adventurers\u2014moves cautiously through this vast wasteland of ancient remains only to realize that while the enormous bones that surround them are ancient, the boneyard is very much alive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Goodman (Bill Randa):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>John Goodman plays Bill Randa, a senior operative of the mysterious government organization Monarch, who has spent years looking for Skull Island. \u00a0According to the actor, while Kong is the island\u2019s biggest creature, he\u2019s far from the most vicious thing here.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are other, even more terrifying creatures on the island, and this is a boneyard of these creatures\u2019 victims,\u201d confided Goodman.\u00a0 \u201cIt was pretty unbelievable what they developed, with the smoke machines and all kinds of crunchy stuff to walk on.\u00a0 I hope they aren\u2019t human bones,\u201d he joked, \u201cbut they sure look like \u2018em.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tom Hiddleston (Capt. James Conrad)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tom Hiddleston stars as former SAS officer Capt. James Conrad, who is recruited as the tracker on the expedition to Skull Island.\u00a0 During the Vietnam War, he had trained both American and South Vietnamese troops in jungle warfare and was sent into wild and war-torn terrain to find and extract soldiers who\u2019d been lost.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019ve always been fascinated by human beings who endure the greatest extremities of nature, and that\u2019s Conrad,\u201d Hiddleston says.<\/p>\n<p>While he found the real landscapes of Hawaii are breathtaking, the actor noted that it\u2019s just a hint of the astonishing world audiences will see in the film. \u201cSkull Island is a place where the natural order of things has been accelerated and expanded.\u00a0 Like any ecosystem, there is a food chain and a natural order here.\u00a0 And when human beings tamper with that, Kong comes out of the woods and into their midst.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Samuel L. Jackson (Lt. Col. Preston Packard)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As Lt. Colonel Packard, the battle-hardened Vietnam vet leading the airborne survey of the island, Samuel L. Jackson said his character takes the assignment just as he and his loyal helicopter unit, the Sky Devils, are preparing to rotate home.\u00a0 \u201cPackard seizes the opportunity for them to have one last flight together before it\u2019s time to go,\u201d Jackson noted.\u00a0 \u201cHe wants his soldiers to feel like winners, and sees this as an opportunity for them to be heroes and come home with some kind of victory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Jackson had been scheduled to film at Kualoa Ranch as one of the stars of <em>Jurassic Park, <\/em>a seasonal hurricane got in the way.\u00a0 Needless to say, he relished this new experience. \u201cI like being in warm places when it\u2019s winter all over America,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cIt really is a blessing and a privilege to able to go out every day and pretend to be something else, and to have as much fun as you possibly can while you\u2019re doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brie Larson (Mason Weaver)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Brie Larson plays Mason Weaver, a self-described \u201canti-war\u201d photographer who muscles her way into the mission out of curiosity about its true purpose.<\/p>\n<p>Her character comes to the mission after braving some of the most dangerous combat zones and hotspots in the war.\u00a0 \u201cShe has a hard-earned reputation for being fearless and willing to do whatever it takes to expose the truth,\u201d Larson described.\u00a0 \u201cThat passion has gotten her into trouble because a lot of publications\u2014and the men captured in her lens\u2014aren\u2019t so crazy about seeing the dark side of the war held up to the light.\u00a0 Another dimension of her is that in the \u201870s, the battlefield was a very masculine place, and this was a chance to pay respect to the women who really did do this job in that world and are still doing it today.\u201d \u201cWeaver has a hard-earned reputation for being fearless and doing whatever it takes to expose the truth,\u201d she revealed.<\/p>\n<p>During filming in Hawaii, Larson arranged a whole series of activities for cast and crew, including karaoke, which she called \u201ccomedy gold!\u201d \u00a0The actress, who earned an Oscar for her performance in the intimate independent film <em>Room, <\/em>plunged into the adventure of the epic <em>Kong: Skull Island <\/em>location shoot.\u00a0 \u201cThe whole experience was incredible,\u201d she raved.\u00a0 \u201cThis was a far more physical role than anything I\u2019ve ever done, and it was great to be able to utilize my physicality in a new way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the cast and crew, the Oahu shoot spanned not only the jungles of Kualoa Ranch and the Waikane Valley\u2019s Ohulehule Forest Conservancy, but Honolulu\u2019s Chinatown district.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tom Hiddleston (Capt. James Conrad)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The adventure also took the cast to the skies.\u00a0 \u201cBrie and I went with the second unit in a formation of Hueys,\u201d Hiddleston recounted.\u00a0 \u201cWe were flying over this volcanic valley and the Pacific in a stunt helicopter, which had no doors, and Brie and I were both leaning out, but fully strapped in and safe.\u00a0 To get to do that and call it a job is amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-37685\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/VF1_ship.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"749\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After braving the elements in Hawaii, the cast and crew traveled to the Gold Coast of Australia to take full advantage of the country\u2019s diverse locales and shoot interiors at Village Roadshow Studios.\u00a0 The studio facility\u2019s huge soundstages became the staging ground for the movie\u2019s biggest set\u2014the rusting shell of the <em>SS Wanderer<\/em>, a derelict ship that long ago washed up on the shores of Skull Island.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the movie\u2019s lighter moments are thanks to a character who has made his home within the interior of the ship \u2013 Hank Marlow, played by John C. Reilly, a World War II pilot who crash-landed on Skull Island and has spent the last 28 years here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John C. Reilly (Hank Marlow)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHank Marlow is an amazing character,\u201d said Reilly.\u00a0 \u201cHe is a man out of his time, but he\u2019s also kind of out of his mind from being on the island for so long.\u00a0 He has gone through his 20s, his 30s, and his 40s pretty much cut off from everything he knows.\u00a0 I would go stir crazy after six months, let alone 28 years.\u00a0 Hank has probably gone mad, become sane, and gone mad all over again a dozen different times.\u201d<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In addition to the studio work,<\/strong> cast and crew took full advantage of the stunning landscapes on the Gold Coast hinterland, including such breathtaking sites such as Tamborine Mountain, Tallebudgera Valley and the Paperbark Forest.<\/p>\n<p>The sand dunes of South Stradbroke Island provided the magnificent backdrop for the film\u2019s opening sequence.\u00a0 But getting there mirrored some of the scripted adventures.<\/p>\n<p>[viewfinder-gallery]<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alex Garcia (Producer)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe took a 30-minute boat ride through Jumpinpin Inlet; then a 40-minute ride down to the beach on dune buggies,\u201d Garcia said.\u00a0 \u201cThe Gold Coast was fantastic because there are various environments available,\u201d Garcia said, \u201cincluding a desert, dense jungle and rocky outcroppings, as well as stage facilities and top-notch crews at Village Roadshow Studios.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tom Hiddleston (Capt. James Conrad)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Conrad being an ace tracker, Hiddleston spent as much time as possible out in the wild, learning how to read various terrains. \u00a0He said his character, like the best trackers, has a \u201cpeculiar sixth sense\u201d when it comes to the natural world.\u00a0 \u201cHe sees the power of nature in Kong and his experience in the wild has taught him the futility of resisting.\u00a0 It\u2019s like shouting into a hurricane.\u00a0 A certain humility is necessary, and Conrad understands that immediately in a way that perhaps Packard, with all his weapons of war, doesn\u2019t.\u00a0 But on this mission, even Conrad\u2019s considerable experience and education is trumped by something new\u2014something primordial and monolithic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Samuel L. Jackson (Lt. Col. Preston Packard)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Naturally, cast and crew also got up close and personal with the continent\u2019s dazzling array of wildlife\u2014from koalas in the trees to families of kangaroos. \u201cIt\u2019s funny when you\u2019re shooting a scene and have to stop because there\u2019s a kangaroo hopping by that\u2019s not supposed to be in the shot,\u201d Samuel L. Jackson said with a chuckle.\u00a0 \u201cOne day, our base camp was invaded by hundreds of kangaroos for some reason.\u00a0 I guess they were hungry \u2026 but Australia is generally not the place where you want to go up to anything with your hand out!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jing Tian (San)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In such exotic locales, the crew encountered other, more frightening forms of wildlife. Jing Tian, who plays Monarch biologist San, got the surprise of her life when she encountered two native species at the same time. \u201cA huge caterpillar landed on my head and a snake was just under my seat,\u201d she recalled. \u201cA snake!\u00a0 I was a little scared, but it\u2019s all part of the experience of being in such an amazing place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>NINH BINH, VIETNAM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-37647\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/VF1_Vietnam.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"755\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Having circled the globe to create their mythical Skull Island, Vietnam, says Jordan Vogt-Roberts, \u201cwas the real show-stopper.\u201d\u00a0 The first major feature film to shoot extensively in Vietnam, it entailed a complex logistical operation to open up the pristine environments in northern Vietnam for filming and to safeguard the ecology before, during and after principal photography.<\/p>\n<p>The production shot for three weeks at various locations in Vietnam, some of which had never before been captured in a feature film.\u00a0 Filming took place in Yen Phu, Tu Lan and Phon Nha Overlook; in Ninh Binh along the Tam Coc River, Trang An, and Van Long Marsh; culminating in the spectacular vistas of Ha Long Bay.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tom Hiddleston (Capt. James Conrad)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some of the country\u2019s more remote locations could only be reached by river. \u00a0The journey took cast and crew across paddy fields inhabited by grazing water buffalo, then navigate through water-caves in vessels piloted by local boatwomen. \u00a0\u201cIt was absolutely stunning,\u201d Hiddleston said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Samuel L. Jackson (Lt. Col. Preston Packard)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jackson described Vietnam as, \u201cIt\u2019s beautiful and exotic, with incredible topography.\u00a0 I love traveling, but had never been to Vietnam, so I\u2019m really happy to have finally experienced it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Director)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Vogt-Roberts was left with a lasting appreciation for the country.\u00a0 \u201cMy hope is that audiences will fall in love with Vietnam and that our film inspires an understanding of its beauty,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cMy experience there was life-changing.\u00a0 I fell in love with the culture and the people of Vietnam, and nothing would make me happier than for the rest of the world to see how incredible and strong the country is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To create the final film experience, footage from three continents was seamlessly woven together to create the home of King Kong. \u00a0\u00a0<em>Kong: Skull Island<\/em> marked only the second film\u2014and by far the biggest\u2014that Vogt-Roberts has made, but he was undaunted.\u00a0 He reflected , \u201cWhat guided me through this epic journey was to create an experience for the audience that will feel so real that it will open up a space for myth and mystery in their lives.\u00a0 Even though we\u2019re making a completely new movie with, with a very different narrative\u2026this is King Kong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And on March 10, 2017, audiences will embark on an adventure that\u2019s even more thrilling when Warner Bros.
