American-born and raised, she has come to know and love London and its art scene since moving here just over 20 years ago. We\u2019re still benefiting from that. It\u2019s a global city that welcomes people from all walks of life, myself included. I\u2019m not from here, but I\u2019ve made a home here. There are so many creative tribes, and that continues to be exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px;line-height:1.5\">The point at which Whitley arrived in the UK coincided with two seismic moments in the city\u2019s art scene: The British government\u2019s decision to make many of the major national galleries and museums free to enter (although you may have to pay to see special exhibitions); and the opening of Tate Modern \u2013 the location of one of her first dates with her now-husband, with whom she has a daughter \u2013 which was utterly different from the \u201cmarble columns\u201d of other major institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px;line-height:1.5\">In her first, formative job, as an assistant curator at the prestigious Victoria &amp; Albert Museum, Whitley recalls being taught \u201cto be civically minded. There was a generosity of knowledge, and a full-service ethos to what it meant to be a custodian of a public collection, that it\u2019s meant to belong to all of us \u2013 whether that meant answering phones on a Saturday or working hard to write in plain English so you don\u2019t need a PhD to understand what someone\u2019s saying about a work of art.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:2px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\" style=\"font-size:25px\">&#8220;I love that I get to experience London as a city through artists\u2019 eyes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\" style=\"font-size:14px;font-style:italic;font-weight:400;line-height:1.5\">Zo\u00e9 Whitley<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px;line-height:1.5\">Later, she took on a joint curatorial role at the esteemed Tate Modern and Tate Britain, two of the UK\u2019s four Tate galleries, which house the national collection of modern art, as well as British art from the 16th century.&nbsp;At Tate Modern, she co-curated the blockbuster 2017 exhibition, <em>Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power<\/em>, before moving to the Hayward Gallery as senior curator, and curating the British pavilion at the Venice Biennale.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DSC_5531__RGB_resized-edited-225x300.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-68482\" width=\"320\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DSC_5531__RGB_resized-edited-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/www.expedia.com\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DSC_5531__RGB_resized-edited-768x1024.png 768w, https:\/\/www.expedia.com\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DSC_5531__RGB_resized-edited-200x267.png 200w, https:\/\/www.expedia.com\/stories\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/DSC_5531__RGB_resized-edited.png 1078w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><figcaption>The Chisenhale:&nbsp;\u201cWe are the place where artists come to see other artists\u2019 work\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px;line-height:1.5\">Whitley joined Chisenhale Gallery in 2020. Based on a residential street in east London, with a primary school opposite and the Regent\u2019s Canal behind, she works hard to ensure it\u2019s a welcoming space for the local community. Its ethos is to nurture artists over a year or more; many of those artists eventually go on to have major exhibitions at other galleries, from Lubaina Himid to Hew Locke, who are currently showing at Tate Modern and Britain respectively. \u201cThe fact that we are the place where artists come to see other artists\u2019 work is something that we take really seriously,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px;line-height:1.5\">What\u2019s more, having been established by artists who were evicted from Butler\u2019s Wharf by property developers, Chisenhale itself tells a story about surviving as a creative. \u201cI live in south-east London, an area which some artists and creatives can still afford, but it gets harder to live in great cities like this,\u201d says Whitley. \u201cThe collective spirit of artists finding a way to make that happen makes places incredibly interesting. She\u2019s a set and stage designer, including for Beyonc\u00e9 and Adele and the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony. You can also hear classical music and live performances there, and have great drinks and a meal at <a href=\"https:\/\/boldtendencies.com\/franks-cafe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Frank\u2019s<\/a>. It\u2019s one of those things London does really well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px;line-height:1.5\"><kbd>Best way to see art with kids in London?<\/kbd><br>Any place can be great for kids. I used to have my daughter take <em>me<\/em> round <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/visit\/tate-britain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tate Britain<\/a>. I\u2019d say, \u201cWhen you\u2019re tired, we\u2019ll get a sandwich and walk along the Thames, but first let\u2019s walk through the gallery and maybe we\u2019ll stop and look at an artwork.\u201d I\u2019ve had some amazing conversations with my daughter as a result of that. The main thing is to keep it fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px;line-height:1.5\"><kbd>Best galleries off the beaten track?<\/kbd><br>For contemporary art, I love <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gasworks.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gasworks<\/a>, just behind the Oval Cricket Ground in Vauxhall. The way they give first shows to artists is not dissimilar to Chisenhale. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.delfinafoundation.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Delfina Foundation<\/a> is a great place to meet artists from around the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p style=\"font-size:15px;line-height:1.5\"><kbd>Best budget day out in London?<\/kbd><br>Come to Chisenhale! Get the no8 bus across town and you\u2019ll have a great day out. After your visit, go to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e3vegan.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">E3 Vegan<\/a> or chew up at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/cafeeastbow\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cafe East<\/a>, then take a walk on the Regent\u2019s Canal. You won\u2019t be disappointed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px;line-height:1.5\"><kbd>What do you say to someone who finds galleries intimidating?<\/kbd><br>A lot of them are making an effort for that not to be the case any more \u2013 there\u2019s less likely to be an invigilator telling you to keep your voice down. I was part of the team that started <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vam.ac.uk\/info\/friday-late\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">V&amp;A Friday Late<\/a> \u2013 the first museum to do late night events, and they were incredibly successful. There are often activities, so it\u2019s not just looking at something or reading a label on the wall.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:15px;line-height:1.5\"><kbd>Favorite public art?<\/kbd><br>I love <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thomasjprice.com\/warm-shores\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Warm Shores<\/a> by Thomas J Price, in front of Hackney Town Hall \u2013 I love to see people stop and look at it. To see yourself represented, it makes a huge difference in people\u2019s lives. Veronica Ryan&#8217;s fruit sculptures, which honor the Windrush Generation, are not far from there.
