The best thing about this tour was the company losing our booking. I had the confirmation email from the tour operator confirming pickup time and location from Hanoi hotel. It said pick up was 8.00-8.30am. Getting closer to 8.30am our hotel receptionist called the company who didn’t have us on their list. At 8.40 a bus from the company picks us up and we had to hand over our travel voucher and confirmation email which is when they realized they made a mistake. The guide got someone on the phone who offered us a free upgrade to one night on the boat and one night on the island. This ended up being the best thing as we had a lovely 24hrs on an overnight cruise that took us to kayaking, swimming, hiking and caves and fed us lovely meals, helping us every step of the way. On the second day they transferred us by speedboat to Cat Ba island. Since we have been here we have little to no idea what’s going on and the facilities are run down.

Ha Long Bay is a must-do, so the point of this is do you choose this one? It is great to have all the travel, accommodation and meals sorted for you. Our experience was not quite as listed. We thought we were staying two nights on Cat Ba Island, but we stayed the first night on a boat in Ha Long Bay, which was wonderful - do that if you can. The boat was sound, the food excellent - and loads of it. Thoroughly enjoyed visiting a cave, kayaking in a lagoon and swimming from a beach. Not so impressed with Cat Ba town - the town is spoilt and lacks character. All guides smiling, friendly and helpful.
