Description

Antigua, Guatemala, is one of the best-preserved colonial cities in Latin America. Spanish colonial ambiance permeates every part of the town—its houses, churches, squares, parks and ruins, and even its traditions and folklore. Explore the city's charm and color, and browse a variety of handmade products that honor the traditions of generations of artisans.

Begin your tour of this UNESCO World Heritage site with walking visits to La Merced Church, one of the city's most important churches, and the Santa Catalina Arch. Built in the 17th century, the arch was originally connected to the convent of Santa Catalina, allowing nuns to pass between buildings without going out on the street.

Next on the itinerary is a walk through Central Park to appreciate the Cathedral of San Jose, Antigua's Roman Catholic church. The original church was built around 1541, but suffered damage caused by several earthquakes throughout its history. It was rebuilt and consecrated in 1680, going on to become one of the largest churches in Central America.

Continue to a jade factory and learn about the green stones that the Mayan civilization considered sacred. Do some more light walking before having lunch, then enjoy some time to shop for souvenirs before your tour ends.
