Description

Welcome to SF's Chinatown, the oldest and the largest Chinese community outside Asia. Since its establishment in the 1840s, it has been highly important and influential in the history and culture of ethnic Chinese immigrants to the United States and North America. Enter the gates of Chinatown and you enter a parallel world. The scent of green tea and incense hangs in the salty ocean air. Red and gold lanterns flutter in the breezes that blow off the bay and in the afternoon they cast an other-worldly glow in the fog. Alleys house buildings alive with activity. The residents live their lives in a language that is not your own. Suddenly it hits you that you are the foreigner, an observer in a distant city, submersed in a culture, thousands of years old, and steeped in tradition. Luckily, on this tour, you're in good hands.

The reality of Chinatown is that there are two Chinatowns: One belongs to the locals, the other charms the tourists. They overlap and dance with each other, drawing more visitors annually than the Golden Gate Bridge. The goal of this tour is to show you this district as a local, in the process, the district will surprise and enchant, seeming somewhat familiar yet at the same time foreign and exotic. After the main streets that cater to the tourist crowds the tour embarks into the alleys and side streets of Chinatown, this is where the locals conduct their daily business, leading their daily lives, which is after all, the real Chinatown.
