Full-Day Herculaneum & Mount Vesuvius Tour from Sorrento

by Acampora Travel Duration 8h Free cancellation available No booking or credit card fees
per adult Price is $55

With its impeccably preserved frescoes, villas, and streets, a visit to Herculaneum is like traveling back in time. Roam the baths, homes, and public buildings of this ancient Roman city, and then journey to the crater of Mount Vesuvius for an up-close look at the volcano that buried it back in 79 AD.

Hop aboard a comfortable coach in Sorrento and sit back for a scenic coastal ride along to the ruins of Herculaneum. Often overshadowed by its neighbor Pompeii, Herculaneum’s more recently excavated archaeological site is extraordinarily well-preserved thanks to the millennia it spent buried in 20 feet (6 m) of volcanic ash.

Buy your ticket to the site and then turn on your headset as you follow your guide down Roman streets that look almost exactly as they did when this now-silent city was a thriving metropolis. Check out colorful mosaics and elaborate frescoes in the elegant Casa d’Argo, and consider the final moments of Herculaneum residents as you see 3 skeletons huddled close together in the Casa del Bel Cortile.

Board the coach and turn inland, climbing up the precipitous slopes of Mount Vesuvius. Detour for a quick lunch break on the way, and then ride up to a point 3,280 feet (1,000 m) above sea level to step out into the barren and arid landscape. Walk up to the crater if you’d like, pondering the power of the natural forces at play beneath your feet, and listen as a local guide explains the geological history of this fabled slumbering volcano.

Unfortunately the full day tour only begins in May so we only did Herculaneum half day tour but it was brilliant and the guide was great, would recommend.
