One of the most stunning landscapes on the planet—Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument is like nowhere you’ve been before. Explore the most powerful attraction in Washington, notorious for its catastrophic 1980 eruption. Trek through a vast lava tube, learn about the volcano's infamous 1980 explosion, and discover how the devastated terrain is rebuilding itself as a revitalized ecosystem.

Join the hardest-working guides in the Pacific Northwest on a day tour to remember! We’re a small, award-winning travel company that blends jaw-dropping natural wonders, outdoor adventure, first-rate customer service and local experiences into relaxing small-group tours that depart from Portland, Oregon. Our guides and tours have been recognized by National Geographic Traveler, CNN, Huffington Post, USA Today 10 Best, Vogue and more.

Get picked up in Portland and ride north into Washington. Drive along the Spirit Lake Highway to reach Ape Cave, the largest lava tube in the continental United States. Walk through the massive, blackened tunnel and stretch your legs with a stroll on the Hummocks Trail or along the banks of Coldwater Lake. Fuel up over a fresh picnic-style lunch before continuing on to reach the Johnston Ridge Observatory, and then embark on an informative interpretive trek along the Eruption Trail.

The journey gives you gorgeous views into the crater on a path surrounded by purple and red wildflowers in the late summer months. Hear about the geological events of 1980 that caused this massive peak to erupt, listen to stories about that fateful day, and learn how scientists monitor volcanoes using modern technology. As you walk, watch for wildlife like elk, beavers, and birds, and see firsthand how this alpine ecosystem is rebounding and recovering after the powerful explosion that changed the shape of the landscape forever.

The Mount Saint Helens Ape cave tour was amazing. Our tour guide Jordan was great, very knowledgeable. The lunch that we had was really good. Out of tours I have gone on from Portland I would definitely recommend Evergreen Escapes tours.
