Description

Escape the bustle of Busan for a day, visiting instead the wonders around Gyeongju. Once the ancient capital of the Silla Kingdom, the city is surrounded by historic and cultural landmarks, as well as UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the Bulguk Temple and Seokguram Grotto.

Get picked up from your hotel and travel from Busan to Gyeongju. The city was the former capital of the Silla Kingdom that ruled much of the Korean Peninsula between the 7th and 9th centuries. Learn about the ancient kingdom during a short film that you watch before visiting the Gyochon Traditional Village. The hanok village gives you a glimpse of life inside the Gyeongju Choi Clan, descendants of the Silla official and philosopher Choi Chiwon.

Later, visit the Daereungwon Tomb Complex, which houses the nobles of the Silla Kingdom. Walk past tombs like Cheonmachong, which once housed a trove of royal treasures, and Hwangnamdaechong, the largest of the tombs. Your guide then takes you to Cheomseongdae, a National Treasure and the oldest surviving astronomical observatory in all of Asia. Learn about its purpose in observing the stars and predicting the weather during the 7th century.

Make your way to Bulguksa Temple, a UNESCO-listed site. The temple, built by King Gyeongdeok in the 8th century, is considered a masterpiece of golden age Buddhist art and a representative relic of Gyeongju. Also pause at the Seokguram Grotto, an ancient stone temple and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your guide explains its miraculous architecture and shows you the carved Buddha statue inside the hermitage

Finally, visit the Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, an artificial pond created as part of a palatial complex during the Silla dynasty. The small palace, which stands overlooking the glassy water, was used as a secondary residence for the Silla crown prince. Admire the picturesque scene of calm waters reflecting manmade landscapes draped in lush flowers, and spend some time unwinding here before returning to Busan.
