Description

Learn a bit of regional history during a walking tour that reveals Porto's strong Jewish heritage. Stroll to sights like the Rue de Santana, where Porto's first synagogue stood, and admire the red-roofed houses in the Old Jewish Quarter, where Sephardic Jewish immigrants settled during the 12th century.

Join your guide near the Porto Cathedral and head into the heart of the bustling seaside city. En route to your first destination, your knowledgeable guide answers all of your questions about the city of yore, and fills you in on the ways in which Christian and Jewish communities have lived together for centuries.

Your first stop lands you at the Rue de Santana, where the city's first synagogue was established. From here, trace a careful route along the Praça da Ribeira, where esteemed members of the Jewish community resided on tiny lanes leading down to the Douro. See the former homes of preeminent merchants, physicists, and goldsmiths along this idyllic stretch of the river.

During the second half of your tour, hike to the Passeio das Virtudes, a verdant promontory with views of Porto's pulsing thoroughfares. Here, learn about the Edict of Expulsion ordered by Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492, which forced many Jewish citizens to conceal their religion, with some members even converting to Catholicism to keep their faith a secret.

Knowledgeable guide, but a lot of stairs and steep climbing. Would have been better going from the top and ending at the bottom by the river.

You need to keep in mind that this is a virtual tour. It was interesting to learn of the history of jews intertwined with the history of Portugal. Steve was very knowledgeable.
