Description

Walk among the fine furnishings, grand interiors, and lovely gardens of the Olveston Historic Home, a time capsule that's remained unchanged since it was the home of the wealthy Theomin family of Dunedin. From the billiards room to the plant-filled glasshouse, discover what daily life was like at this impressive estate.

Make your way to the grand Olveston Historic Home in Dunedin and take in the fine stone exterior before meeting your guide and heading inside. Hear about the Theomin family, who lived in the house for 6 decades after having it built back in 1906. Study the design of English architect Sir Ernest George, which combines aspects of traditional English manors with decorative detail and a taste for more strict and streamlined forms.

Hear about what life was like in the estate over the last century, and discuss the changes that were made to modernize the home over the decades while keeping its character intact. Walk through rooms filled with original antique furnishings and priceless artwork, take in the colorful decor of patterned wallpaper and gleaming woodwork, and check out the old-fashioned ovens and stoves in the beautifully intact kitchen. After your tour, be sure to save some time to admire the home from the outside, stroll through the rose garden, and see the old family car—a 1921 Fiat 510 Tourer.

That was probably the nicest day trip I've ever done. The tour guide made all the difference, other self guided visitors kept trying to snoop in and overhear our guide, because he was so informative and made it so interesting.
