Description

Walk in the footsteps of Vincent Van Gogh as you visit Arles, the city the Impressionist painter called home. See sites that inspired famous works, and venture out into the countryside to soak up the charm of Les Baux and Saint Rémy before catching a light and art show in a former quarry.

Meet your guide in central Avignon or right at your hotel and ride south along the banks of the Rhône to Arles, a prominent city in the region since Roman times. Scope out UNESCO-listed World Heritage Sites like the ancient amphitheater, which dates back to the first century BC. In the medieval center, stroll past landmarks that Van Gogh painted in the late 19th century, like the hospital courtyard and the famous yellow café from Café Terrace at Night.

From there, wind your way back north into the countryside to the Carrières de Lumières, a former quarry that now hosts a spectacular multimedia light and sound show. See well-known paintings projected on rock walls to the sounds of music before continuing on to the hilltop village of Les Baux-de-Provence. Admire the castle ruins crowning the rocky summit, and meander down cobbled streets as you window shop for colorful Provencal wares.

Your last stop is in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where Van Gogh painted his masterpiece The Starry Night. Visit the Monastery Saint-Paul de Mausole, where the painter received psychiatric care, and spend some time absorbing the picturesque charm of this idyllic village before your return ride to Avignon.

Manon gave us a wonderful tour. The Van Gogh part of the tour was even better than I hoped for. And the Carriere de Lumineres is something not to be missed. A great way to see the Provence countryside if you don't have a car. Truly a memorable day!

Our guide Jacques was very knowledgeable and took us on a walking tour of Arles, including the Van Gogh sites, bull running festival locale and the Roman sites. At St. Remy we visited the hospital where Van Gogh was treated. The countryside was marvellous.

Fabulous lumieres show in the quarry highlighted the day! Really something to experience. The Footsteps of Van Gogh tour was terrific. At each place in Arles where he frequented, there is posted pictured he painted depicting the life around him. He seemed to be happy while living in Arles as his paintings' colors were bright blues, yellows, purples and green. Good tour but would have liked to go into the amphitheater to hear the acoustics of this ancient Roman theater.
