Description

They say that behind every stoic Japanese businessman face there is a secret. The Japanese often refer to “honne tatemae,” which loosely translates to something along the lines of keeping the publicly acceptable face forward, and the true face within. This, combined with Japanese culture's general disdain for public affection, might make Tokyo seem to not have as vibrant an LGBT presence as you might expect. Worry not: In a city as big as Tokyo, there is of course a thriving gay scene – if you know where to look.

Tonight, you'll not only see Japan's largest gayborhood, Shinjuku 2-chome, but also Asakusa in the evening. You'll also get a solid primer in Japanese gay society, both past and present. We'll stop along the way for some yakitori (vegetarian options available too), and a couple of drinks too. Get ready for a well-rounded adventure into the heart of homosexuality in Japan, led by a friendly Japanese guide who knows firsthand what it means to be gay in Japan.

Even though this in an LGBT-oriented tour, you are welcome to join regardless of how you identify!

tl;dr - Great tour, loads of info, laid back. But have some dinner beforehand. This was a great tour that really gave us some insight into the LGBT scene in Tokyo, and how it’s changed over the years, as well as some of the reasons why. Our guide, Kevin, was awesome and told us some interesting stories from his own experience as well as more general history of the areas we were in, and explanations of Japanese culture as it pertained to the topic at hand. It was a weekday so the bars and streets were not full of people which was actually more interesting as we were able to sit down in one of the bars and talk more about the gay scene in Japan. I feel like I got my money’s worth, and then some! Note: it’s written in the description, but a full dinner is not provided (we had some appetisers at a stand-up place -delicious!) so make sure you have something before the tour.
