Description

Unlock the history and legends of the Scottish Highlands on this 3-part tour to Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle, and the Great Glen. Sail the murky waters that are said to be home to the elusive Nessie, explore the ruins of once-mighty Urquhart Castle, and take in the stunning sights of the surrounding country.

Following your arrival in downtown Inverness, a coach carries you to the shores of Loch Ness, where a boat waits to carry you out into the water. Grab a seat on the deck or in the heated indoor area, and gaze upon moody views of glassy water and fog-covered hills. As your personal audio guide fuels your imagination with captivating tales of the legend, scan the waters for the Loch Ness Monster herself. Use the boat's onboard sonar to ascertain her coordinates, or simply peer out in search of the famous long neck and 50-foot (15-m) hump.

After exploring the depths of the water, deboard the boat at 13th-century Urquhart Castle. Roam the ruins to discover its crumbling tower and decayed gatehouse. Along the way, learn about the centuries of conflict that took place on these grounds, including the numerous raids that eventually led to its destruction.

You then return to the harbor, where you hop back on the coach for a drive through the verdant Scottish Highlands. Travel along the dramatic Great Glen Way, gazing out the window at craggy cliffs and mist-filled valleys. Gain insight into the region's rich history and fascinating myths before returning to downtown Inverness.

The day did not start off optimally as the cruise part of the trip was cancelled due to high winds and weather. That being said, our tour guide Allan (who very obviously loves his work) more than made up for it with his factual knowledge and tale telling on the tour itself. Charming and witty, he supplemented the gorgeous scenery and history perfectly. Kudos Allan..! Urquhart Castle is an interesting walkabout site and wonderfully maintained. It is not a castle in the 'interior' sense, but the ruins of what was once a castle, so if you're expecting throne rooms and parapets, maybe consider something else (you'll miss out on some expansive stunning scenery of the loch and surrounding shores, mind you). We still haven't seen Nessie, but we'll be back...!!

Great tour. Beautiful day and appreciated the tour guides on the Loch Ness boat. They were very helpful and happy to answer any questions. We would have liked more time at the castle.
