Description

Ride along the Potomac River as you leave Washington, D.C. behind and make your way to the former home of George Washington at Mount Vernon. Spend the day exploring the first president's estate, the gardens of Martha Washington, and an onsite gift shop with delightful goods from around Vermont.

Get picked up from your hotel in Washington, D.C. and head to the Mount Vernon Estate, passing by notable landmarks as you drive. Wind through the charming streets of Alexandria's old town, see where General Robert E. Lee grew up, and spot Gatsby's Tavern, where Washington was often found tipping back a pint of cider.

When you reach the estate, hop out and begin your self-guided exploration. You might start in the Palladian-style mansion, where exhibits and artifacts chronicle the home's construction, or make your way to the English gardens, where edible and ornamental plants fill the spaces in between winding walking paths.

Continue on to the estate's outbuildings, blacksmith shop, gristmill, and distillery for up-close looks at what life might have been like on this fully functional plantation, and then pay a special visit to the final resting place of George Washington and his wife, Martha. Before you leave, make sure to stop by the gift shop to browse made-in-America goods, presidential souvenirs, and an array of artisanal products like candles, cider, and housewares.

Charles was a nice person but should not speak too fast and enunciate his words well. It was difficult to understand the jumble of words and sentences.otherewise his personality was great!
