6:45 AM, Mt Cook Adventure Tour including Glacier Boat Ride in English

Duration 12h

Small group tour including Glacier Boat Ride at Mt Cook with Glacier Explorers.

The only tour of its kind in New Zealand and one of the only accessible glacial lakes containing icebergs in the world.

An amazing encounter with New Zealand's largest glacier, the Tasman Glacier. Explore and learn about the ever-changing glacial landscape as you journey across the terminal lake in our custom-built MAC Boats with your experienced guides. Icebergs of every shape and size periodically tear away from the face of the glacier into the rapidly growing lake. Lateral moraines rear up almost 200m to remind us of the scale and greatness that the glacier has reached in previous times.

With the effects of global warming and other climatic processes taking their toll on New Zealand glaciers, their retreat is imminent. Now approximately 27km long and 600m deep, the Tasman Glacier is melting and calving at an exponentially increasing rate.

6:45 AM, Mt Cook Adventure Tour incl Heli Hiking in English

Duration 12h

Small group tour including an incredible Heli Hiking experience.

An adventure in the realm of the mountaineer, hiking on the white ice of the Tasman Glacier.

You land at 1,200 metres above sea level and spend up to 2 hours in the mountains. This is a guided interpretative trek on the “white ice”. The terrain is an amazing landscape of fluted ice, runnels, moulins, and sinuous winding streamlets.

As your crampons bite into the ice, you will trek on gentle undulating terrain, below the highest peaks of the Southern Alps (Aoraki and Mount Tasman). The snow-clad giants tower above vast ice-falls that bulldoze and grind down the mountain sides.

Your helicopter will return you safely to The Helicopter Line base, Glentanner flying close by the massive 1,000 metre high (3,200 feet) Hochstetter Icefall at the end of your adventure.

The helicopter flight is twice as far as at Fox or Franz Josef Glacier - so the heli flight is a great value scenic experience, in addition to the ice walk.

Description

At 3724m, Aoraki/Mt Cook is New Zealand’s highest peak, however the mountain can be viewed without any acclimatisation whatsoever from nearby Aoraki/Mt Cook village which is just 750m above sea-level, making this fully guided, small group day tour perfect for all fitness levels.

Your guided tour begins with hotel pick-ups in Queenstown (selected pick up points only). We then make our way through the stunning Kawarau gorge, Cromwell and the quaint township of Omarama, where you'll have the option to taste the best creamy chicken pie in NZ (in our opinion)! We will then climb up through Lindis Pass, one of only three alpine roads through the otherwise impassable Southern Alps.

Our next stop is Lake Pukaki, one of the bluest lakes you will ever see, framed by the backdrop of Aoraki/Mt Cook and the Southern Alps. We will also see the location of several scenes from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

Arriving at the alpine village of Aoraki/Mt Cook and The Hermitage (home of the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre) you then have 4 hours to explore many of the village’s popular activities and attractions (additional cost - please choose the tour option you would like to do during the booking process to add the cost of the activity or attraction to your tour). Option include:

Hikes and walks (Free)

Multiple walks in the area, from the Tasman glacier lake short walk to the 3-hour Hooker Valley Track. We can drop you off at and pick you up from the start of the walks if you don’t want the added distance and time required if starting from the Hermitage. Our guides are well-versed in the local tracks and are more than happy to help you choose the right walk or track for you.

Glacier Explorers Boat Trip (Summer Only - 1 December to 30 April)

Heli Hiking

Sir Edmond Hillary Alpine

Scenic Heli-Flight with Glacier Landing

The Ultimate Alpine Experience - Heli/Ski Plane/Glacier Landing

Whatever you choose to do, whether relaxed or adventurous you will have four hours to enjoy the simply outstanding region of Aoraki/Mt Cook, and we’ll transport you to wherever you want to go.

At the end of the day we farewell Aoraki/Mt Cook Village and make our way back to Queenstown for hotel drop offs. On the way, we stop in at High Country Salmon, a local salmon farm, where you can feed the fish and taste some of the freshest salmon in New Zealand, selecting from the farm’s fresh salmon-based menu.
