Description

Perched precipitously atop massive stone monoliths, the UNESCO-listed monasteries of Meteora—the name is Greek for “suspended in the sky”—are jaw-dropping. Visit the cliffs above Thessaly to see the remote, hard-to-reach residences of the isolated monastic communities that call these eyries home.

After you're picked up from your hotel, ride toward the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Meteora, where monasteries were built on top of towering rock pinnacles to provide prayerful monks and world-weary worshipers a peaceful haven from the bloodshed of the waning Byzantine Empire. Once upon a time, the monasteries could only be reached by a vertiginous climb up rope ladders, but today you can climb up on steps hewn into the cliffsides.

Visit all 6 of the monasteries with your guide, and head inside 3 of them if you'd like to see priceless artifacts and paintings from centuries past. A knowledgeable guide explains what life was like for the monks and nuns who lived here in the past, and offers insight into the modern-day communities that still choose to live in these sky-high sanctuaries. Stop along the way to take plenty of photos, and stretch your legs with walks to scenic viewpoints before leaving these stony retreats behind.

The tour is just a bus ride from one place to the other. The guide did not say much. Other then the buss ride there is not much added value. However, on the same tour there was the Italian guide and he did do a good job with Italian speaking part og the group.

Guides were friendly and knowledgeable, taking time to explain different aspects of each place and answer our questions. They were also flexible with the tour schedule and had great suggestions for some self-touring. Excellent tour and value.

The guide was knowledgeable and the provision of cold water was a nice touch. But waiting in long lines to get inside the Great Meteoro and Varlaam ate up quite a bit of our time. I would recommend: (1) arranging for a separate entrance/line for tour participants; (2) including the ticket prices in the tour price and distributing the tickets in advance; (3) also arranging for a guide inside the monastery - otherwise the value of the experience is not that high.
