Description

Explore the authentically restored properties of the Destrehan Plantation on a tour that takes you back through centuries of Louisiana history with roundtrip transportation. Along with a visit to a private wildlife refuge to see the creatures in Manchac Swamp, you learn the stories of sugar barons, slaves, and freedmen whose lives defined the estate.

After you check in at the ticket office, a climate-controlled tour bus carries you into St. Charles Parish for your visit to the plantation grounds. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the plantation's French-style manor dates back to 1787, built by slave labor under Spanish colonial rule. Learn the story of the Destrehan family, who built one of Louisiana's leading sugar producers, and the plantation's role in the largest slave revolt in American history.

Throughout the tour, interpreters in period dress relate stories of the everyday lives of the plantation's owners and slaves, and trade demonstrations give a look at the labor that went into maintaining its business. You then take a short ride to Manchac Swamp, where a boat carries you through the Louisiana Wetlands for a look at the alligators, snakes, and birds who still make their home in the wilderness.
