At Poas National Park, look down into the blackened lunar landscape of the 8,885-foot (2,708-m) tall crater. As the billowing smoke and steam dissipate over the fumaroles and sulfuric lake at its center, watch for erupting geysers—they've been known to shoot up to 820 feet (250 m) into the sky.

Make your way down the fertile volcanic slopes to the Doka Estate, where the Vargas family has been growing and harvesting coffee for 3 generations. Learn about coffee from bean to cup as you visit the seedbed and the historic, 93-year-old coffee mill. Discover the roasting process at the Café Tres Generaciones to sample the plantation’s blends—they have 8 that range from smooth to bold, including organic and decaf varieties.

Sit down to enjoy a delicious lunch of regional Costa Rican specialties, and then hop back in the bus to make your way to the quaint town of Sarchi. Famed for its brightly colored handicrafts, Sarchi is home to craft markets stocked with decorative oxcarts that were once used to transport coffee beans to markets around the country. Shop for jewelry, furniture, and wooden goods built by the town’s artisans before your return trip to San Jose.

Richardo was an amazing guide and kept us

informed with lots of facts and statistics as we rode to the volcano which made the ride go quickly. The only disappointing part was the cloud cover over the caldera which the tour could do nothing about. Great tour!

Our tour guide (Donald) was very knowledgable

with commentary in Spanish and English, the only drawback was not spending enough time in the town of Sarchi towards the end of the tour.
