Description

Unravel centuries of Javanese medicine with a visit to a bustling traditional market full of fresh herbs and produce. Get a hands-on glimpse into the making of jamu (Indonesian medicine), and learn about the many healing benefits of these ancient herbal remedies.

After you’re picked up from your hotel, enjoy a private tour of the Beringharjo market. Wander among colorful stalls displaying fresh and exotic fruits, herbs, and vegetables. Listen as your guide explains the traditional uses and significance of some of the produce on display.

See a jamu lady peddling homemade remedies and cures for an array of ailments, carefully bottled up in colorful containers. Next, follow your guide to a local jamu seller within the market, where he points out the purposes of each herb, spice, and flower, helping you pick the ingredients to create your personal medical blend.

Finally, you visit a jamu shop that has been in operation since 1950. Under the guidance of the local dukun (doctor), start grinding, macerating, mixing, and pressing your own herbs to create a general tonic, believed to encourage good health, for you to take home.
