Check out one of the most famous strongholds in the Philippines with a day of sightseeing on Corregidor Island. From the ruins of barracks and gun emplacements to Gen. Douglas MacArthur's headquarters in the Malinta Tunnel, you get a look at one of the great military bastions of World War II.

When you meet your guide, set out from your hotel and take a ferry across Manila Bay to the island. A ride aboard a pre-war streetcar, or tramvia, gives you a look at the remains of this historic island fortress, known as “The Rock” during World War II. This island's strategic location made it the bastion to fall during the Japanese invasion, and plenty of historical landmarks remain to remind you of its role.

After a scenic look across the bay from the island's 19th-century lighthouse, you step into the cavernous Malinta Tunnel, which served as the command center for American forces and the temporary home of the Philippine government during the months-long siege. Watch a light and sound show that depicts the island's role in the war, and then enjoy a buffet lunch at the Corregidor Inn before the ferry ride back to Manila and your return trip to your hotel.

When I booked this tour I thought of giving my son a little education on Philippine World War II history. We got a lot more than what I expected. From hotel pick up, to the cruise, to the excellent food that was served for us at the Corregidor Hotel to our very fun tour guide "Doms"... it was just a great experience overall and don't get me to start talking about the incredible views of the dock from the hotel. Here's another thing I was very grateful for. During the tour, my son had a little tummy issue and felt very weak and didn't really get a chance to eat at all. Doms made an arrangement with the hotel to give us a complimentary room for a couple of hours until he gets better and while I continue the tour at the latter half of the day. Now if you ask me, this is above and beyond the call of service for a tour guide. I am planning to bring the rest of my family and book this same tour within a year or two!

The tour on the island was very interesting and informative. Don't be fooled by the word "Private." We were picked up from our hotel and driven to the ferry in a private car. Then we joined the other 200 people on the ferry. On the island we were crammed into a tranvia with 29 other people. This was not a problem in itself, but certainly did not fit with my idea of a "private" tour. We were well treated by all we encountered, drivers, guide and ferry staff. An enjoyable day but not what was advertised
