Description

Taste your way around the historic neighborhood of Kota Gede, immersing yourself in local heritage through its food. Aboard a 3-wheeled becak (a traditional Javanese rickshaw), learn about Yogyakarta history as you tour the area to try samples of kipo rice cakes, chocolate, and kembang waru cake before lunch.

Your culinary adventure begins with a transfer from your hotel to Kota Gede, a historic neighborhood in Yogyakarta established in the 16th century. Meet your becak driver, who also acts as guide for the day, and climb aboard the 3-wheeled, pedal-powered vehicle. Cycle first to a factory famous for producing kipo, a local specialty made from sweet shredded coconut wrapped in glutinous rice flour. Watch how the chewy cakes are made and sample a few before moving on.

Pass through streets lined with beautiful homes built in the traditional Javanese style. Your guide explains the history of the area as well as the Javanese-Hindu and Muslim influences on its architecture. Arrive at the Monggo Chocolate Factory, which produced the first Belgian pralines in the region, and help yourself to samples of the decadent treat while learning about chocolate's rise in popularity in the city.

Your last stop of the day is at the Kembang Waru Cake Factory. Shaped like a hibiscus-like waru leaf, the sweet snack is traditionally served to guests while waiting for a meal. Taste the cake still warm from the oven before heading back to your starting point for a delicious lunch that ends.
