Description

Learn the story of one of South America's great ancient civilizations with a visit to the ruins of Tiwanaku. Your time in this UNESCO World Heritage Site gives you a chance to see the surviving artworks, ceramics, and grand structures that predated the famous Inca Empire by more than 1,000 years.

The day begins with a cable car ride followed by a bus trip to the Tiwanaku Archeological Complex, the remains of a city that is thought to have been a center of pilgrimage for an empire that dates back to the 4th century. See the iconic Gate of the Sun and Gate of the Moon, massive doorways each cut from a single piece of stone, along with the half-buried pyramid of Akapana and the wide, walled courtyard of the Kalasasaya temple.

In addition to your time in the ruins themselves, you may visit remarkable sites nearby. Either the ceramics museum, which holds a collection of surviving containers and artwork from the ancient empire, or the complex of volcanic blocks at the Pumapunku, a terraced set of building blocks where some stones stand a full 23 feet (7 m) high.

After that, sit back and enjoy the ride on your way back.

Omar did a very good job on our tour. He was knowledgeable about the two sights we visited. Our driver was safe driving to and from our destination.
