Description

Pay a visit to Rotoroa Island, a unique center of arts, heritage, and conservation only a 75-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland. Explore walking trails among regenerating native bush and explore the old chapel, jail house, and award-winning museum to learn the story of the island's history.

For more than 100 years, Rotoroa was off-limits to all but a few souls isolated there for alcohol and drug rehabilitation in the care of the Salvation Army. Now, you can take a cruise right from Auckland to visit this historic arts, heritage and conservation estate. Bring your walking shoes and a picnic to explore the island, or simply relax with a swim at one of 4 beautiful beaches.

Along with its beaches, the island has good and varied walking tracks, heritage buildings, and an award-winning museum and exhibition center. You can explore trails through the regenerating bush, see the monumental sculpture by Chris Booth, and contemplate views across the Gulf to the Coromandel.

As the Hauraki Gulf's newest wildlife sanctuary, Rotoroa hosts several endangered native species that are being repopulated as well. Keep an eye out for kiwi, saddlebacks, reptiles, and takahē as you explore the returning wilderness.

Fantastic day out to a Treasure of an Island. Lovely walks, bird-life, stunning beaches. An interesting history to the Island which is well-covered by the guides on walks
