Dip your paddle in the spring-fed waters of the San Marcos River as you explore its delicate ecosystems and forest-lined banks by kayak. Look for rare salamanders, learn about the river's ecology, and soak up the tranquil atmosphere a world away from Austin's bustling streets.

Meet up with your guide near Lady Bird Lake, where you can hop in a shuttle and take a quick ride south toward San Marcos. Created by natural springs, the San Marcos River bubbles to the surface just steps away from the town that shares its name. It's balmy temperatures are ideal for year-round swimming and paddling and its crystal clear waters make it an ideal place to scope out marine life.

At your launch point, go over a few basic paddling tips and help carry gear down to the water before hopping in your boat and pushing off from shore. Navigate a private stretch of the river where leafy trees bend over the banks and long bends in the river hide new discoveries. Chat with your guide about the area's ecology, see if you can spot reddish-brown San Marcos salamanders scooting along the river's bottom, and enjoy an active day out on the water before your return to Austin.
