Description

From a nondescript village, Shimla rose to become the 'summer capital' of British in India. The colonial government, enticed by its salubrious character, ended up spending more time at this hill station than the real capital — Delhi. Today it is the capital of the state of Himachal Pradesh and holds the lingering echoes of bygone era.

In this guided tour of Shimla you will visit the Viceregal Lodge, State Museum and library and Jakku temple. The Jakhu Temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman and is situated on Jakhu Hill, the town's highest peak and vantage point for Shimla's famous views. The Institute of Advanced Studies is housed in the erstwhile Viceregal Lodge which was constructed in 1884-88 during the tenure of Lord Dufferin. A commanding building on the Summer Hill, it is built of Himalayan grey stone in the English Renaissance style and has extensive gardens. The Himachal State Museum has twelve galleries in which an effort has been made to project hill-art and the cultural wealth of the state.
