Description

Tap into the artisan underbelly of Accra on this guided cultural walking tour. From traditional bakers and friendly fish mongers, to innovative metal workers and shoemakers, meet talented tradespeople, see their ingenuity in action, and learn the importance of their role in Ghana's modern capital.

After meeting your guide in Old Accra, walk to Ga-Mashie—the center of the city’s historical area. Pay a visit to a shoemaker who melds leather from Northern Ghana into fashionably durable footwear. Watch as he works diligently within his shop and—while peering over his shoulder—ask about his techniques and inspirations.

Next, stop at a nearby bakery to learn (and inhale) the secrets of bread making using traditional African clay ovens before heading to the harbor at Ngleshie. Jamestown’s shores—the heart of this coastal community—features a close-up look at Accra's hardworking fisherman. Check out how they cast their nets and reel in their catch from small wooden boats—singing enchanting songs of the sea as they work.

From the docks, make your way to a local factory where discarded scrap metal is transformed into everything from cooking tools to art sculptures. You can meet bronze and tin craftsmen for a chance to marvel at their handiwork and chat about their artistry. Your final stop is at a workshop of a renowned coffin carver, where you can see the elegant caskets and learn about the much celebrated funeral industry in Ghana, before returning back to Old Accra.
