Description

Embark on a culinary exploration of Bulgaria's capital, enjoying breakfast in the city's warm cafés and traditional bars. See landmark sights and savor the aromas as you taste your way through Graf Ignatiev Street's famous market and walk between pastry shops and authentic restaurants.

Begin at the Alexander Nevski Cathedral, admiring its beautiful architecture and central, gilded dome that towers 148 feet (45 m) high. On your way to a typical snack bar, pass by sights like the 6th-century Hagia Sofia Church, Sofia University, Parliament, and the statue of King Libertador for a glimpse of Bulgaria's history.

Once you've worked up an appetite, try a savory banitsa pastry—filled with cheese and sometimes meat or nettle, this uniquely Bulgarian treat is accompanied by a cold ayran yogurt beverage. Wind through the narrow streets of the old city to Graf Ignatiev Street. Here, the gastronomic choices spread out before you are vast—sample fresh fruit and vegetables, nibble baked nuts, or feast on various snacks amid lively crowds of shopping and dining locals.

Head to a famous pastry shop famed for its traditional Bulgarian desserts for a mouthwatering taste of honey-drenched baklava. If your sweet tooth still needs appeasing, indulge in sugary fried tolumbichki, cream cake, or other delicacies—all accompanied by a glass of the locally beloved fermented wheat drink boza.

We had a most enjoyable couple of hours being taken around Sofia sampling traditional Bulgarian breakfast food on the way and being given a good informative outline of Bulgarian history as we walked with buildings of interest pointed out
