Description

Trade the bustle of Munich for the beautiful scene at the foot of the Chiemgau Alps on this tour through a landscape with classic Bavarian charm. Your guide shows you historic gems like an 11th-century abbey and one of the grand castles of King Ludwig II as you admire the outstanding sights around the Chiemsee.

On the ride out from central Munich, you get a great look at the patchwork of farmland and forest that stretches across the countryside of Upper Bavaria. Your first stop is in the charming riverside town of Rott am Inn, where you can visit an elegant Rococo church that once served a Benedictine abbey with nearly 1,000 years of history.

Next, you visit the quaint Medieval-style community of Wasserburg am Inn. A viewing platform gives you the perfect vantage of the old town, which stands on a peninsula framed by the river. Afterward, a short walk takes you through a 500-year-old gate and past the battlements, bay windows, and pastel-colored walls of the town center.

It's then time for the tour's main event with a ride to Prien am Chiemsee, found on the western shore of the lake's clear blue waters. Look out at the little island of Frauenchiemsee, home to a still-functioning women's monastery, as well as nearby Herrenchiemsee, the largest island on the lake where the 19th-century king Ludwig II had a palace built to rival Versailles. Your guide leads you back to Munich in the afternoon after a day full of terrific sights.
