Description

Venture to Old Fadama with an expert guide for a different view of city life. See both the hardship and optimism that define the day-to-day for those who have come to Accra in search of a better life. Visit the enterprising and resourceful community of people who thrive here in the face of adversity.

The world’s largest electronic waste dump site, Old Fadama is an overcrowded and poverty-stricken urban slum on the outskirts of Accra that 80,000 people call home. In spite of their harsh living conditions, the Ghanaians here—many of whom have migrated from rural areas seeking opportunity—still find ways to live with dignity and pride.

Meet some of the industrious people who run businesses, fashion crafts, and organize programs for the residents where the local government has not. With your knowledgeable guide leading the way, learn how spirited and inventive locals turn old appliances, machinery, and trash into opportunities to make a living by reselling or repurposing components and materials.

As you tour, spend some time asking questions about the work and way of life in this warmly hospitable and proud community, and leave with a deeper understanding of the realities and struggles of modern-day Ghana.
