Description

On this tour our bus will take you from Nagoya to the historical town of Takayama and the UNESCO world heritage village of Shirakawa-go, the two most important sites of central Japan.

In Takayama, you will have the chance to explore the nostalgic Sanmachi Suji District, characterized by the traditional buildings made with fine wood work.
The streets of this district are lined with traditional houses, shops, restaurants, cafes and sake breweries, where you can have some free tasting of the local spirits.

A 30 minute-ride will take you to Shirakawa-go village, one of the few places in Japan that resisted to the country's modernization.
The old gassho-zukuri (thached-roof) style houses are spotted around this mountain village. Surrounded by rice paddies, you can breath the atmosphere of old, rural Japan. Located in a mountainous region that was cut off from the rest of the world for a long period of time, villages like this one subsisted on the cultivation of mulberry trees and the rearing of silkworms. The large houses with their steeply pitched thatched roofs are the only examples of their kind in Japan.

You will surely be impressed by the contrast of tradition and modernity, when you will get back to Nagoya in the evening.

The tour was advertised as Cantonese speaking. The entire trip was done in mandarin. Those are two completely different languages and that’s a very fundamental failure in the tours description. The weather is not something that can be controlled - as the snow prevented us from making it to Takayama and from 0800 to 1430 we were basically driving back and forth on the highway..BUT, what was most frustrating was the complete lack of communication from the tour guide. She explained nothing about the massive delays we were experiencing. As well, how did “ bus one “ ( we were bus two ), manage to make it to all the destinations and within the normal allotted time frame ? I think our entire group was frustrated with the delays and the complete lack of explanation. It took a random passenger on the bus to announce and translate what was even going on to the rest of us. Overall, of course I’m glad we made it by 1430 to Shirawakago, but the entire “tour“ was extremely poorly executed, if at all

The Shirakawago was fantastic and breathtaking! Though the guides were disorganized, will try harder to find an affordabke english speaking tour next time.

Only chose this because it was the cheapest option, but was not worth it. The amount of time to visit Takayama is very short. They only give you 1.5 hours to explore Takayama and 2 hours for Shirakawago. Most of the time spent is sitting on the bus. Instructions are very unclear if you don’t speak Cantonese. The worst part of it was that it wasn’t really a tour guide and you have to explore the places on your own and be back at the bus parking by a certain time. Unfortunately, I got lost in Takanawa and was about 30 minutes late to arrive at the bus parking, where we had to meet at 1 pm after eating lunch on my own expense. The tour bus left me stranded in Takazawa sincr it had left exactly at 1 pm. I called their customer support, they said I have to be on the way to Shirakawa go by taxi ($200) or find my own transportation home. I opted to go home and just go to Shirakawago on a different day for a tour in Japanese/English.
