Description

Do you want to know more about the REAL war of thrones! Come with us on an intriguing adventure passing through centuries of heroic battles, political struggles and a true war for the dominion over the Balkan peninsula. Take our private tour to the city of VelikoTurnovo and hear the stories about the mighty Assen dynasty, the arrival of the Ottomans and the war for the survival of the Medieval Bulgarian empire.

Our day will start early. At 8 o’clock you will be picked up from your hotel in Sofia to start the 3 hours journey to Bulgaria’s medieval capital – Veliko Turnovo. Situated in the Pre-Balkan heights, Turnovo is one of the most beautiful cities in the country. In this lovely place the breathtaking nature and the intriguing history had made their rendez-vouz, marking Turnovo as one of the most important tourist sites in Bulgaria.

We will arrive approximately at 11 o’clock. After parking the car we will head towards the fortress of Tsarevets, where we will spend two hours of exploring in deep details the history of the Assen dynasty back in the time when they were ruling the country. You will hear the stories of the battles between the Bulgarians, the Byzantines and the Latin and how the Ottomans have arrived on the peninsula in the beginning of 14th century and conquered it. We will explore the ruins of the Baldwin tower, the Royal palace and the Patriarch church and at some point we will feel just like the medieval citizens of the city, searching for the reason why they believed that Tsarevets was the most beautiful city in the area.

After the fortress we will head towards our restaurant for a nice traditional Bulgarian lunch, overlooking the hills of Veliko Turnovo and enjoying the view of Yantra river slowly running below the city buildings.

Somewhere at 3 o’clock we will depart towards Arbanassi village. Situated just 2 km from Veliko Turnovo, at 3.15 we will stop in front of “Nativity of Christ”, a lovely church from 17th century. Here we will enjoy the frescoes from 16th and 17th century, painted in remarkable style and admire the genius of the Arbanassi artists. After that we will make a quick stop at the Konstantsaliev’s house, an amazing example for the Bulgarian architecture style from 18th and 19th century. We will learn how the Bulgarians had lived in these late centuries of Ottoman rule, their traditions and way of life.

At 16.30 o’clock we will departback to Sofia.
